Starting Over in Your 20s: How to Rebuild Your Life When Nothing Goes According to Plan

Nobody really prepares you for the moment when the life you planned no longer looks like the life you’re living.

Maybe a relationship ended. Maybe you’re between jobs. Maybe you’re raising a child while trying to figure out your career. Maybe you’re watching people your age reach milestones you thought you would have reached by now.

Starting over can make you feel like you’ve fallen behind. But sometimes, what looks like your life falling apart is actually the beginning of you building it differently.

I’m learning that rebuilding doesn’t happen all at once. Sometimes it looks like applying for another job. Going back to school. Finding another way to make money. Creating a peaceful home. Setting boundaries. Saving your first $100. Or simply deciding that the life you had before isn’t the life you want anymore.

That’s what Becoming & Building is about: becoming the person you want to be while building the life you want to live.

1. Accept That Your Timeline Has Changed

One of the hardest parts of starting over isn’t always the actual change. Sometimes it’s letting go of the timeline you created in your head.

You thought you’d have the relationship figured out by now. The career. The money. The degree. The home. Maybe even the family.

And when life doesn’t follow that timeline, it’s easy to look around and convince yourself that everyone else is ahead of you.

But you’re not running their race.

Your plans changing doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re working with a different set of circumstances now. Instead of asking, “Why am I not where I thought I would be?” start asking, “Given where I am today, what can I build from here?”

That question gives you somewhere to go.

2. Get Honest About Your Money
Because rebuilding feels very different when your finances are unstable. We’ll talk about knowing exactly what’s coming in/out, debt, emergency savings, and finding extra income, without pretending everyone can magically save $1,000 a month.

3. Build Your Career One Move at a Time
Jobs, going back to school, certifications, changing careers, applying even after rejection.

4. Stop Being Ashamed of Starting Small
Side hustles, temporary jobs, living differently, asking for help; all of it.

5. Create a Life You Actually Want This Time
Not rebuilding the same life just because that’s what society expects.

6. Give Yourself Permission to Become Someone New

Starting over gives you the freedom to become someone you haven’t met yet. You don’t have to rebuild the old version of your life, you can build something that fits who you’re becoming now.
